My mother’s sister, Mary Ellen Boyle was killed in the north strand bombing. Her husband went out to check on his mother as a bomb had fallen on the North Circular Road. When he returned, 157 North Strand Road had been hit and Mary was killed instantly, yet their baby Joan was saved. The story I heard as a child was that her cot was blown over and she was found later among the rubble. The bombing of the North Strand was spoken about a lot in our house when I was growing up in Marino in the 1950s.
