On the night of 30-31 May 1941 four bombs were dropped by German aircraft on the North Strand area of Dublin, killing 28, injuring over 90, and destroying 300 houses. To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of this tragedy, a special event will be held at Charleville Mall Library on 31 May 2016 at 2.30 pm.  Historian and archivist of St John Ambulance Brigade Pádraig Allen will outline how the Brigade who were on duty coped with the injured and dying in North Strand, drawing on previously unseen records from the St. John Ambulance Brigade archive.   The North Strand Bombing Exhibition devised by Dublin City Archives will be on display and extracts from the Dublin City Archives Oral History Project with survivors of the bombing will also be played.

On 31 May 2011, Councillor Ray McAdam, representing the Lord Mayor of Dublin, and the German Ambassador, His Excellency Busso Von Alvensleben officially re-opened the refurbished Memorial Garden and unveiled a plaque commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the North Strand bombing.  This commemorative ceremony, for the victims of the bombing, took place at 2pm in the Memorial Garden on the grounds of Marino College, Dublin 1 in front of a crowd of approximately 250 people.

Tuesday, 31st May 2011 @ 12pm– Meet at the Charleville Mall Library, North Strand, Dublin 1 .

Join historian, Pat Liddy as he visits the sites that were bombed by the German Luftwaffe on the fateful night in May 1941, bringing a taste of the horrors of World War ll to Dublin.  The tour will last 90 minutes and will include eye-witness accounts of the bombing. It will finish at Charleville Mall Library where the North Strand Bombing Exhibition and Oral History Project devised by Dublin City Library and Archive, will be on display.   This special event has been organised to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the bombing.

The bombing of Dublin’s North Strand by Nazi aircraft on 31st May 1941 was an assault on Ireland’s neutrality.  The casualties were many: 28 dead and 90 injured, with 300 houses damaged or destroyed.  On Saturday 29th May Volume 2 of the North Strand Bombings Oral History Project will be launched with a full day seminar to commemorate the tragedy. The seminar will include talks about various aspects of the bombing including censorship, compensation, and the role of the emergency services.
